Altitude and Food Plant Dependent Growth Variation in Pupa Of Indian Tasar Silk Insect, Antheraea Mylitta Drury (Saturniidae) Grown During Rainy Season

چکیده
The nutritional status of food plants and altitudes play pivotal role in successful rearing of Indian tropical tasar silk worm Antheraea mylitta Drury both in commercial and seed crops. The pupa is the most crucial stage of its life cycle for the adult life and race continuation as well as for exploiting its genetic potency and dynamics to our best advantages. In the present investigation an experimental rearing of Antheraea mylitta Drury was carried out during rainy season in Similipal Biosphere Reserve, Mayurbhanj, Odisha, India to evaluate the performance of growth parameters like length, diameter and weight of pupa metamorphosed from mature female larva reared on eight different food plants at lower, medium and higher altitudes. The performance of all the growth parameters of the female pupae at all the three altitudes was observed to be significantly the highest in Sal food plant (Shorea robusta Gaertn.) and the lowest in Jamun host plant (Syzygium cumini (L.) Keels). The investigation also revealed that irrespective of the species of food plants, higher altitude is the most favourable for tasar cocoon crop performance in comparison to medium and lower altitudes during rainy season. In view of comparatively superior performance of growth parameters of female pupa of A. mylitta during rainy season, the eight species of food plants utilized were graded in the order Sal > Asan > Arjun > Ber > Sidha > Dha > Bahada >Jamun and the altitudes were ranked in the order higher altitude > medium altitude > lower altitude.

Prospect and importance of green mulching on the soil status of tropical tasar plantation fields in India
The soils of tropical tasar plantation fields in general are sloppy and are primarily deficient of nutrition due to top soil erosion and constant leaf productivity exploitation to rear tasar silk insect, Antheraea mylitta Drury. The rainfed field of Terminalia tomentosa (W&A) plantation has been evaluated for soil fortification with green mulching through legumes, Sun hemp (Crotalaria juncea), ...
متن کاملComparative Study of Total Hydroperoxides and Antioxidant Defense System in the Indian Tropical Tasar Silkworm, Antheraea mylitta, in Diapausing and Non-Diapausing Generations
In the present study, the total hydroperoxides, catalase, glutathione-s-transferase, and ascorbic acid contents were determined in different developmental stages of the non-diapause and the diapause generation of the tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). The results showed stage-specific significantly higher levels of total hydroperoxides, catalase, and as...
متن کاملIdentification of RAPD and SCAR markers associated with yield traits in the Indian tropical tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta drury
The tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta, is a semi-domesticated vanya silk-producing insect of high economic importance. To date, no molecular marker associated with cocoon and shell weights has been identified in this species. In this report, we identified a randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker and examined its inheritance, and also developed a stable diagnostic sequence-cha...

The tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury, Andhra local ecorace is an exclusive race of Andhra Pradesh. It is on the verge of extinction due to difficulty of acclimatisation at breeding and rearing stages. As an attempt to protect this race, a method of total indoor rearing has been done. In this context, the estimation of free amino acids, excretory products- urea and uric acid were compared...
